About
One of the busiest fishing harbours on the east coast — come at dawn for the catch and the auctions.
Visakhapatnam Fishing Harbour, in Old Town beside the port, is one of the largest fishing harbours on India’s east coast. Hundreds of brightly painted trawlers and boats are moored in its basins.
The best time to visit is dawn, when boats return and the catch is unloaded onto the wharf. Mountains of sardines, mackerel, prawns and seer fish are sorted, iced and auctioned in a noisy, colourful scene.
This is a working harbour, not a tourist attraction. Wear shoes you do not mind getting wet, keep out of the way of workers and vehicles, and ask before photographing people.
