About
Hilltop Buddhist monastery near Bheemili with 16 rock-cut cisterns and views over the Gosthani.
Pavurallakonda, “hill of pigeons”, rises behind Bheemunipatnam and is known locally as Narasimhaswamy Konda. Its summit holds the ruins of one of the largest Buddhist monasteries in north coastal Andhra, inhabited from about the 1st century BCE to the 2nd century CE.
The most striking features are the sixteen rock-cut cisterns carved into the hilltop to catch rainwater, along with remains of stupas, viharas, carved reliefs and moonstones.
The climb is rewarded with views over Bheemili town, the Gosthani river and the coast.
