About
Pyramid-topped tombs of Dutch traders and a 19th-century lighthouse by the sea at Bheemili.
Bheemunipatnam was a Dutch trading post on the Coromandel coast in the 17th and 18th centuries. Its Dutch cemetery, near the beach, is one of the most evocative relics of that era: a cluster of tombs topped with tall, pointed pyramids and obelisks.
Some tombstones carry inscriptions in Dutch; part of the cemetery also holds later British graves.
Nearby stands the small white Bheemili lighthouse, built in 1868 and since restored. Together with the beach and the old town, they make a rewarding half-day trip.
