About

Twin hills of rock-cut Buddhist caves, carved Buddhas and hundreds of monolithic stupas near Anakapalli.

Bojjannakonda and Lingalakonda are twin hills at Sankaram, just outside Anakapalli, about 40 km from Visakhapatnam. Together they form one of the most remarkable Buddhist sites in Andhra Pradesh, active from around the 4th to the 9th century CE.

Bojjannakonda has rock-cut caves with a pillared chaitya, carved Buddha figures in niches and a large stupa on the summit. Lingalakonda next door is covered in rows of small monolithic stupas cut straight from the rock, cascading down the hillside.

The carvings span different phases of Buddhism, from early schools to later Mahayana and Vajrayana. The site is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India.
