About
A large freshwater lake ringed by hills, with lotus beds, dugout canoes and migratory birds.
Kondakarla Ava is a large natural freshwater lake near Atchutapuram, about 50 km from Visakhapatnam, surrounded by low hills and coconut groves. It is a bird sanctuary and one of the best birdwatching spots in the region.
In winter the lake fills with migratory waterbirds alongside resident herons, kingfishers, rollers and weaver birds. Lotus and water lilies cover parts of the surface, and local fishermen glide across in narrow dugout canoes.
Sunrise and sunset over the water are beautiful; boat rides are sometimes available.
